The Unschool is a place for play, curiosity, exploration, expansive interest, abundant messiness and boundless energy–all mechanisms that young mammals use for acquiring knowledge and skills to live within any given society. In cases of healthy development, children encounter problems to solve, develop interests, assimilate to social norms, and integrate brain and body function. Children need caring guidance, obviously, but they also need freedom to be filled with wonder and movement and even to be totally bored and contemplative. What is troubling, of course, is that it is difficult for modern urban families to give children this experience of guided freedom. Our mission is to curate the best parts of the happiest childhoods–nature, animals, play, friends, family, belonging, freedom, and joy–and offer them to the children in our care.
